When a Serum Starts Strong But Ends in Breakouts

The honeymoon phase didn’t last so now I’m torn.

I was genuinely excited to try the Dr. G A'Clear Spot For Face Serum. With its sleek, clinical packaging and reputation for being gentle yet effective, I was hopeful it might help manage my occasional breakouts without wreaking havoc on my skin.

And at first? It really delivered.

The texture was gorgeous, lightweight, fast-absorbing, and completely non-sticky. It melted into my skin without any greasy residue, and more importantly, there was zero irritation. No redness, no burning, just a smooth, calm finish. By the next morning, I noticed a subtle, healthy glow that made me feel cautiously optimistic. Even better, within a few days, a few pimples that had been lingering started to fade. I thought I’d found the one.

But then, everything shifted.

About a week in, my skin flipped the script. Breakouts started popping up faster than I could keep up. I figured it was purging, totally normal for actives, right? but this purge felt particularly aggressive. The spots weren’t healing quickly, and new ones kept forming. After trying to push through, I finally stepped back and paused the serum. Slowly but surely, my skin began to calm down again.

Now I’m left in limbo.

I really loved how this serum felt on my skin and the early glow it gave me but that intense purge left me second-guessing everything. I’m debating whether to give it another go and hope my skin adjusts, or to part ways and find something a little gentler.

- Has anyone else tried this serum?

- Did it work for you or were you caught in the same purge spiral?

Would love to hear your experience.

That sounds like more than just purging tbh. If you’re seeing breakouts in new areas or cystic flare-ups, it might be a sign your skin doesn’t agree with something in the formula. Could be one of the anti-acne actives triggering irritation rather than pushing anything out.

You might like Iunik’s Tea Tree Relief Serum if you’re looking for a gentler alternative. Much calmer, still targets breakouts but way less risk of overdoing it. It doesn’t give that ‘fast results’ glow, but your skin might thank you long-term.

Weirdly, it worked great for me but only when I used it every 2-3 days

Honestly been there so many times. Sometimes it’s not even the active, but how it plays with the rest of your routine. I’d give your skin a break and try reintroducing it with barrier support products.
