My Skincare Diary - The Best and Worst, part 1

Hi girls! I have posted a bunch of lists so far and was really heartened by how helpful others found it, so I thought I’d share it here too. However this time I’ll keep the reviews short and sweet, but feel free to ask if you want me to elaborate on anything!

About My Skin

I’m with combination, acne-prone, and sensitive skin. My skin does not get along with fragrance, citrus oils, or floral essential oils, so I’ve become a bit of an ingredients nerd by necessity. I still have plenty to learn, but hopefully this list helps others with similarly reactive skin or anyone looking to simplify their routine based on honest experiences.

1. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer SPF 30 – 3/10

Pros : Fragrance-free, fairly rich and moisturizing, ideal for those with dry, compromised skin barriers.

Cons : Unfortunately, this broke me out and really irritated my eyes so much so that they watered and burned throughout the day. I had high hopes given the brand’s reputation for sensitive skin, but this one didn’t work for me.

Best for : Possibly better suited to dry skin types without eye sensitivity. If you don’t have a history of sunscreen reactions, you may have better luck than I did.

2. Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser – 0/10

Pros : None for me, sadly.

Cons : The scent was off-putting to me, even though it’s marketed as fragrance-free, it caused breakouts, and it didn’t effectively remove makeup or sunscreen. It just felt like I was rubbing jelly on my face that wasn’t doing much of anything.

Bottom Line : I know this cleanser has a cult following, but if your skin is sensitive or you wear sunscreen/makeup daily, this may not be the best option.

3. Drunk Elephant Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser – 6/10

Pros : Clean, minimalist ingredient list and no added fragrance, always a plus. It leaves the skin feeling very clean.

Cons : Unfortunately, it also leaves my skin feeling tight and a little dry. I could see this working well for oilier skin types, but for me, it was a bit too stripping with continued use. Also, it is very pricey for what it is.

Best for : Oily or very resilient skin types who like that squeaky-clean post-wash feel.

4. La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 60 (US Version) – 3/10

Pros : No white cast, which is impressive for a high-SPF sunscreen. It also layers well under makeup in terms of texture.

Cons : Sadly, this was a breakout trigger for me. It also felt greasy and stung my eyes like crazy throughout the day, which made me reluctant to even finish the bottle.

Bottom Line : I’d recommend skipping this and going for the European version if you can get your hands on it as it’s genuinely better in both feel and performance.

5. La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50+ (European Version) – 9/10

Pros : No white cast, no irritation, and a lightweight formula that still offers high protection. It’s one of the few sunscreens I feel confident wearing every day, especially with sensitive skin.

Cons : The texture is a bit on the runny side, which can be slightly annoying when dispensing or applying, but that’s a minor trade-off for how well it performs.

Bonus Points : LRP donates to skin cancer research, which is something I personally really appreciate from a brand with their reach and platform.

Best for : Pretty much anyone, but especially sensitive skin types who need reliable protection without the drama.

Hope this helps my fellow sensitive skin friends navigate the skincare jungle and I'm always happy to share more if it's helpful! Stay tuned for the next chapter:)

If you’re still on the hunt for a basic cleanser, the Hada Labo Foaming Cleanser did better for me without causing irritation

Funny enough, the Drunk Elephant jelly cleanser worked okay for me, but I had to strictly follow up with a barrier cream or my cheeks would start peeling. Definitely not one I’d repurchase though

It always blows my mind how much better EU sunscreen formulations are.

Girl! Seriously, american sunscreens suck! You know they even classify them as an over-the counter drug. I said DRUG!

Thanks for this! Have you tried any Korean sunscreens that didn’t irritate your eyes? I’m still hunting for one that’s both gentle and has solid UVA protection

Tried innisfree, goodal and roundlab and of them, goodal was the best for me. No stinging, no pilling, and still hydrating!
