From Slick to Solid : Lip Balms That Heal vs. Just Sit There

Lip Type : Dehydrated, prone to easy chapping

Climate : Hot, humid summers; dry, cold winters

Key Need : Hydration-first formulas with some occlusion; wax-heavy or petrolatum-only balms are not sufficient

💧 Top Performer : Alternative Stereo Lip Potion (Steaming Milk)

Type : Gloss applicator / bottle

Use : First step in overnight routine

Review :

This product delivers exactly what it promises: deep hydration in a smooth, pleasantly cooling formula. It layers effortlessly and works beautifully under an occlusive balm. While the price point ($13–15 USD) is a bit steep, the performance justifies the cost. Since starting this, I’ve had zero issues with chapping. If budget allows or a sale hits, this is a must-have repurchase.

Rating : ★★★★★

💡 Great All-Rounder : Benton Honest Lip Balm

Type : Squeeze tube

Use : Day and overnight wear

Review :

This balm is a reliable multitasker. Slightly more occlusive and hydrating than Farmstay, it wears comfortably day or night. Fragrance-free and non-sticky, it’s also budget-friendly, making it a strong staple in a hydrating lip care routine, especially layered over more essence-like products.

Rating : ★★★★☆

💎 Budget Hero (with a Catch) : Farmstay Real Collagen Essential Lip Balm

Type : Squeeze tube

Use : Day wear

Review :

Thicker and longer-lasting than Torriden’s lip essence, this balm impressed with its hydration despite a low price point. Unfortunately, the overpowering floral scent is a major drawback. A workaround (blowing on lips post-application) helps dissipate the scent quickly, making it tolerable given its performance and price.

Rating : ★★★★☆ (minus one star for fragrance)

🥈 Lightweight SPF Pick : Abib Protective Lip Balm Block Stick

Type : Stick balm

Use : Daytime SPF protection

Review :

Soft but not overly emollient, this balm is well-formulated for daily SPF protection. While it’s not the go-to when lips are dry or cracked, it performs fine for maintenance in the sun. With an accessible price-to-SPF ratio, it earns a spot as a summer essential just not a hydrating hero.

Rating : ★★★☆☆

😕 Overhyped : Torriden Solid In Lip Essence

Type : Squeeze tube

Use : Attempted overnight; better for daytime

Review :

With high expectations due to online hype, this lip essence underperformed. It leaned too occlusive and lacked the hydration necessary for truly chapped lips. Packaging durability was also disappointing as the tube cracked near the end. Overall, a pass for problem-solving hydration.

Rating : ★★☆☆☆

👻 Invisible but Limited : Dr. Ceuracle Vegan Kombucha Tea Lip Balm

Type : Stick balm

Use : Daytime maintenance

Review :

This balm goes on ultra-light and feels lovely conditioning and subtle, great for no-makeup days. But for anyone dealing with dehydration or damage, it falls short on performance. Ideal for those looking to maintain already healthy lips, not for repair.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

👎 Missed the Mark : A’PIEU Honey & Milk Lip Oil

Type : Tube with doe foot applicator

Use : Tried for overnight and daytime

Review :

Heavy, sticky, and lacking payoff, this was the most disappointing balm of the bunch. Despite its nourishing-sounding ingredients, it transferred easily, wore off quickly, and left lips feeling no better than before. It’s relegated to emergency-only status in the bottom of a purse.

Rating : ★★☆☆☆

Final Thoughts

If you're navigating fluctuating climates and chronically dehydrated lips, the best strategy is layering hydration-first balms (like Alternative Stereo Lip Potion) with an occlusive follow-up (like Benton Honest Lip Balm). Avoid hype-heavy products that lean too far into occlusion without addressing moisture, and beware of overly fragranced budget balms unless you have a workaround.

Your lips will thank you.

I also recommend my lifetime fav lip balm, one from Bioderma! This is super moisturizing and since my lips are easily exfoliated, i cannot live without this

Same with you, Torriden lip balm so overrated, I know their products are overall well-performing but not is this lip balm 😅😅
