Battle of the hair serums: Which one reigns supreme?

I’ve gone through more hair serums than bad decisions during my bleached-hair phase, and I figured it was finally time to share some thoughts. These are the five I’ve used most consistently over the past two years — and here’s how they stacked up.

1. BioSilk Silk Therapy Original

Texture: Ultra-light, almost watery. Absorbs fast.

Performance: This was my first-ever hair serum, and it still has a soft spot in my routine. It adds instant silkiness and shine, but you do have to be careful — one drop too many, and you’re entering greasy territory.

Scent: Very distinct and powdery. You either love it or it gives you a headache.

Best For: Fine to normal hair that needs light frizz control and shine.

My Hair Type: Bleached ends, naturally wavy, oily roots.

⭐️ Rating: 4/5

📌 Still a classic. Light but powerful — just don’t overdo it.

2. Mise En Scène Perfect Serum Original

Texture: Slightly thicker than BioSilk, but still silky and easy to spread.

Performance: Affordable and consistent. This one never lets me down. It coats the hair well and gives a smooth, glossy finish without weighing it down. A little goes a long way.

Scent: Sweet and floral — quite strong but pleasant.

Best For: Damaged or dry hair from coloring or heat styling.

⭐️ Rating: 5/5

📌 If I had to recommend one universal drugstore pick, this is it.

3. Elizavecca CER-100 Hair Essence Oil

Texture: Cream-oil hybrid. Slightly sticky if used too much.

Performance: This one is more of a leave-in treatment than a pure serum. It’s great for overnight use or post-shower hair masking. I don’t love it as a finishing serum because it can feel heavy.

Scent: Kind of artificial citrus? It fades quickly though.

Best For: Severely damaged, porous hair.

⭐️ Rating: 3/5

📌 A rescue mission, not an everyday product. Good but situational.

4. UNOVE Silk Oil Essence Hair Serum

Texture: Rich and nourishing without feeling greasy. Closer to a traditional oil than the others.

Performance: I was really impressed with this one. It smooths flyaways, hydrates the ends, and adds a subtle glow. Feels more luxe than its price point.

Scent: Light, salon-clean kind of scent. Very subtle.

Best For: Medium to thick hair types, or dry ends.

⭐️ Rating: 4/5

📌 Elegant and balanced — my go-to for humid days.

5. Moroccanoil Treatment Light

Texture: Lightweight but substantial — almost cushiony.

Performance: This is the most high-end of the bunch, and it shows. My hair feels smoother for longer when I use it, and the shine is real. The Light version is perfect for fine hair like mine — the original was just too heavy.

Scent: The signature Moroccanoil scent. You know it. You either love it or it takes over your room.

Best For: Fine to medium hair, especially post-blow-dry.

⭐️ Rating: 5/5

📌 The price hurts, but so does my hair without it.

Final Ranking (For My Hair Type):

1. Mise En Scène Perfect Serum Original — 5/5 (budget holy grail)

2. Moroccanoil Treatment Light — 5/5 (premium luxury pick)

3. UNOVE Silk Oil Essence — 4/5 (best daily all-rounder)

4. BioSilk Silk Therapy Original — 4/5 (light and nostalgic)

5. Elizavecca CER-100 — 3/5 (great for damage, not everyday)
