HAKU Active Melanoreleaser & Inner Melanodefenser - Worth the Hype?

The HAKU line by Shiseido has built a cult following in Asia, particularly in China, for its skin-brightening promise. Despite its popularity abroad, I’ve noticed a surprising lack of in-depth reviews in Western spaces. After finishing full bottles of both the Active Melanoreleaser Toner and Inner Melanodefenser Emulsion, I figured it was time to share my experience.

I picked up both products during a sale at a Toronto beauty boutique for about CAD$50 each, a solid deal considering the premium branding.

Active Melanoreleaser Lotion (Toner)

At first glance, the toner’s watery texture didn’t exactly scream "game-changer." But looks can be deceiving. Over time, this became the standout in the duo. My perpetually dry skin became noticeably smoother and more hydrated. I was genuinely surprised by how refined and tighter my pores looked, results I typically wouldn’t expect from such a lightweight formula.

The difference became undeniable when I ran out of the toner before the emulsion. My skin quickly reverted to flakiness and dullness, confirming that this product had been pulling more weight than I’d initially thought. While I can’t claim it delivered dramatic brightening results, it certainly contributed to clarity, softness, and a healthy glow. Bonus: I didn’t experience a single breakout while using it, and even my stubborn closed comedones disappeared. For a brief moment, I had genuine glass skin.

The downside? The scent. It’s technically fragrance-free, but there's a faint chemical odor that’s hard to ignore. Still, for the results it delivered, I’d rate it a 10/10 and would repurchase in a heartbeat if my budget allowed.

Inner Melanodefenser Emulsion

The emulsion, in contrast, was more of a supporting act. It’s a lightweight moisturizer that offers a temporary boost of brightness and hydration, but the effect fades quickly. When paired with the toner, it helped maintain my skin’s glow, but on its own, it just didn’t provide enough nourishment, especially for someone with dry skin like mine.

After I ran out of the toner, I used the emulsion alone for a couple of weeks and my skin went straight into flake mode. I can see this working better for someone with oily or combination skin, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a standalone product for dry skin types. Overall, I’d give it a 6/10 as I enjoyed it as part of the duo, but I wouldn’t repurchase it individually.

Final Thoughts

Together, the HAKU Active Melanoreleaser and Inner Melanodefenser delivered impressively smooth, glowy skin and helped keep breakouts at bay. However, if your primary goal is to fade hyperpigmentation, these aren’t going to deliver transformative results. At best, they’ll offer a subtle brightening effect and improved texture.

If you’re curious about the line, start with the toner as it’s the hero product here. I’d skip the emulsion unless you’re already using the toner and want a lightweight moisturizer to pair with it.

My only real gripe is the price point. At CAD$50+ per product, they’re a bit of a splurge. I’ll be keeping an eye out for dupes, but if I can’t find a worthy substitute… well, RIP to my wallet.

Okay but the before-and-after texture change sounded real. Like not just marketing fluff.

@Influencer True. And it didn’t break them out either. That’s rare.

@Influencer Kinda love that the toner outperformed the emulsion. Plot twist!

Still feels like a “you have to buy both” trap. Not for me.

I mean, subtle but consistent is underrated. Not everything has to be a miracle.

@Influencer Yeah, especially if it keeps your skin stable. No more breakout roulette.
