Beginner-Friendly Retinal Exists?! My Honest Review of KSECRET’s 2% Serum

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my experience using the KSECRET - SEOUL 1988 Serum, especially for anyone who’s curious about retinal but hesitant to make the leap from retinol. This product is marketed as a powerful yet gentle anti-aging serum featuring 2% retinal liposome and fermented black ginseng extract, and after a few weeks of consistent use, I have quite a bit to say.

✨ Background & Context

This is my first time using retinal (retinaldehyde), the direct precursor to retinoic acid, and a step up from the more commonly used retinol in terms of potency. For comparison :

- Retinol has to convert to retinal, then to retinoic acid

- Retinal skips a step, meaning it works faster and more effectively but potentially with more irritation

Since I’d only used retinol before, I was a bit anxious about jumping into retinal. But surprisingly? No irritation, no peeling, and no redness. Just smooth, glowy skin that honestly looks more refined already. 👏

🧴 Formula & Texture

The serum has a lightweight, lotion-like texture that absorbs beautifully. It layers easily under moisturizer and doesn’t feel heavy or greasy, which is especially nice if you’re in a warmer climate or tend to avoid thick nighttime products.

Some standout ingredients :

- Retinal Liposome 2% - Encapsulated retinal means slower, more controlled release to reduce the risk of irritation

- Black Ginseng Ferment - Known for its antioxidant, brightening, and revitalizing properties

- Glycerin + Macadamia Seed Oil - Help maintain hydration and reduce potential dryness from the active

The combo of retinal and nourishing emollients gives it that perfect balance of efficacy and comfort. It feels like it was made for sensitive or first-time users.

📈 Results & Performance

Here’s a breakdown based on the manufacturer’s ingredient claims and what I’ve observed so far (I’m about 3 weeks in) :

- Hydration : Immediate as skin feels soft and plump the next morning

- Brightening : Subtle glow is beginning to show around week 2

- Texture Smoothing : Skin feels more refined, especially around my cheeks and jawline

- Fine Lines : Too early to say definitively, but I’ve noticed less creasing around the eyes upon waking

- Sensitivity/Reactivity: None and I’m typically reactive with strong actives

If you’re wondering about purging : I haven’t experienced any. I eased it into my routine every other night for the first week and then moved to nightly use.

💰 Price & Value

I paid around $25 USD, which is remarkably affordable for a retinal serum, especially one with liposomal delivery and botanical extracts. This is a category where similar products often retail for $60–$100+. For the performance and formulation, I’d rate this a 10/10 for value.

📝 Final Thoughts : Would I Recommend It?

Absolutely, especially if :

- You’re retinoid-curious but worried about irritation

- You want faster results than retinol, but still gentle on the skin

- You’re looking for an elegant formula that hydrates and treats without overwhelming your skin barrier

It feels like a “training wheels” retinal but still potent enough to make a visible difference.

💬 If anyone else has tried this serum, I’d love to hear your experience! And if you’re just exploring retinal options, feel free to ask questions, I’m happy to help where I can.

Okay hold up, 2% retinal AND no irritation?? That feels illegal. This sounds too good.

Right?! I’ve been side-eyeing retinal for months because I was scared of turning into a flaky tomato. But this might be the one.

Can we talk about how underrated encapsulated retinal is though? Slow release is the key if your skin flips out easily like mine.

I literally googled “retinal vs retinol” mid-read lol. Did not realize retinal skips a whole conversion step. So it's like... retinol but on espresso?

And still no peeling? None?? I was fully expecting this review to say "but my skin fell off a little."

Right?? I kept waiting for the “but” and it never came. And the price??? $25?? I’ve paid more for glorified moisturizers 😩

Seriously, most retinal serums I’ve seen are like $70 minimum. This one’s giving : luxury on a budget. Plus the black ginseng is such a flex.

I love that it's not just retinal tho. Like yes, be potent but also hydrate me, nourish me, coddle my barrier while you're at it.

Same. The glycerin + macadamia oil combo sounds chef’s kiss. I can’t do anything too harsh right now or I break out like a teen.

It’s giving “training wheels but make it effective.” Honestly the way op described the glow after week 2? I felt that spiritually.

Also loved how they eased it in slowly. Every other night at first = pro move. People forget actives need a lil onboarding period.

Also a shout-out to the reviewer for mentioning no sensitivity despite being reactive. That’s actually what sold me the most.

@Influencer Same. I’m that person who gets red from thinking about retinoids. This gives me hope.

Lmao SAME. Already planning my routine around it. This might finally be the retinal that doesn't roast my soul.
