From Desert Face to Dewy Grace : My Paula’s Choice-Rescue

Intro :

After spending a month in the high desert climate of New Mexico this past winter, my already dry-leaning skin transformed into something closer to parchment paper. I live in Denver, no stranger to dryness myself but the New Mexico air made Denver feel like the tropics. Cue the skin emergency.

Between tightness, flaking, and a new level of irritation I hadn’t dealt with before, I dove headfirst into skincare research. One brand that kept popping up was Paula’s Choice, so I committed to a small haul to rebuild my skin barrier and (eventually) introduce a retinoid to tackle fine lines, uneven tone, and blackheads. What I didn’t anticipate was how complex and often confusing the world of over-the-counter retinoids would be. But more on that in a minute.

Here’s one of the Paula’s Choice products I’ve been using consistently for the past 2.5 months (since mid-February), in the order I apply them.

For context : I have combination-to-dry skin, live in a dry temperate climate, and my concerns include sensitivity, redness, T-zone blackheads, early signs of aging, and hyperpigmentation.

🌿 PC Moisture Renewal Oil Booster

Price : $38 for 0.67 oz

Rating : ★★★★☆ (4/5)

My first foray into facial oils! This blend of plant-based oils (including jojoba, argan, and sunflower) is formulated to support a compromised skin barrier and boost moisture levels. It’s the kind of product I wouldn’t have even considered if not for the full-on skin crisis but it’s been a surprisingly welcome addition.

I don’t use it daily; instead, I treat it like a skin insurance policy. I mix 2–3 drops into my moisturizer when I feel my skin needs that extra layer of occlusion usually on no-SPF days or particularly dry mornings. It pairs especially well with lighter moisturizers, making them more winter-appropriate without overloading my skin.

As expected, it takes a while to absorb. But as long as I’m staying home, I don’t mind a slightly glossy finish as it’s all part of the healing process. And while it doesn’t feel like a powerhouse product, I do think it’s played a subtle but important role in rehydrating my skin over the last few months.

My only hesitation? The price. For such a small bottle, I think there are more affordable oil blends out there that would likely perform similarly. Still, it was a helpful recovery product during a tough season.

Verdict : A luxurious helper for barrier repair, but not essential enough for the price. WNRP, though I wouldn’t mind receiving it as a gift.

Final Thoughts

If you’re battling skin that's been wrecked by winter (or travel to high-altitude, dry climates), Paula’s Choice has some comforting, barrier-friendly options. Just keep in mind : not every product is a hero, and price-to-performance ratios matter, especially when you're rebuilding a whole routine.

Okay, I think this might be the first time I’ve actually considered a facial oil for my routine. Like, I’ve always stayed away, but if it’s doing that much for her skin barrier, I might be sold.

I get it! I always thought oils would make my skin too greasy, but sounds like this is a good “insurance policy” kinda vibe. Plus, the fact that she only uses it when needed is a game-changer. You don’t need to commit to it every day.

It's interesting how she describes it as a subtle helper. Not flashy, but apparently effective? Honestly, that's how I want my skincare to be quietly working in the background.

The whole winter damage thing really speaks to me. I can't even imagine what my skin would look like after a month in a desert climate😬😬 I'm curious how well it would pair with my current routine. I'm already using a lot of hydrating serums but I could see adding this oil for that extra layer when my skin's really parched.

Yeah I feel like this could be perfect for when I travel or after a day of being in the cold. I've always had some dry patches that I never know how to treat without causing breakouts. She mentions it's especially good when you don't need SPF. That's key for me since I don't always wear spf indoors.

@Female/Oily That’s a good point. Sometimes I feel like my skin’s too dry for regular moisturizers during winter, and this could add the right balance. The only thing that’s throwing me off is the price tag for such a small bottle. At $38, I feel like I could explore other oils. Do you guys think it’s worth it?

@Female/Sensitive I mean, she does mention it’s not essential enough for the price, and I agree. If I’m just looking for hydration and barrier repair, I’d want something that goes a bit further. For $38, there are definitely other oils out there that could be just as effective, especially if I’m not using it daily.

@Female/Sensitive Yeah I've seen a few alternatives that costless but still have a lot of the same ingredients. It seems like this is more of a luxury helper than a must-have for everyone, especially when the price is factored in.

@Female/Combination I'd love to try it as a gift but yeah I'm not running to buy it myself unless it's a good deal.

@Female/Combination Same here, love to try it for the barrier benefits but the price definitely gives me pause.

@Female/Oily If I ever see this on sale, you know I’m jumping on it. I’ll definitely treat it as a luxury product for those moments when my skin really needs TLC. But yeah, I’ll probably hold off until then.

@Female/Sensitive Same! I love the idea of it, but I’ll wait for that perfect deal. For now, I’ll stick to using my budget oils and see if I can get the same effects. Still, I love hearing about these kinds of hidden gems.

@Female/Sensitive For sure, I'm all for treating myself occasionally but I need to know it's worth the splurge. Gonna keep this one in my back pocket for when I'm ready to spend!

Okay, but really, imagine having this oil to use after a week of terrible skin days. It feels so tempting. Like, having it in my routine could be the little boost I need when my skin feels like it's on the verge of a meltdown.

I know! I get that. It’s one of those products that feels like a little luxury like, you just know it would make your skin feel better, but you're also like, "Do I need it?" If I get a dry spell during winter, this could totally save me.

@Female/Sensitive Exactly! It seems like the kind of product that’s easy to grab when everything else feels like it’s not cutting it. Plus, mixing a couple of drops into my regular moisturizer sounds like such a simple fix for dry, tight skin.

@Female/Sensitive Right? It’s not like you have to build a whole new routine around it. Just add a couple of drops and boom instant barrier support. I love how effortless that sounds, honestly. It’s perfect for when you’re feeling lazy but still want your skin to look and feel good.

@Female/Sensitive Yeah, it’s all about making things easy when your skin’s freaking out. And the fact that she uses it on non-SPF days... that could be a game-changer for me. My skin tends to get the driest when I’m just chilling at home and not using SPF, so I could definitely use that extra layer of moisture.

@Female/Sensitive I feel you. That’s exactly when my skin goes into full freak-out mode, too. Like, what’s the point of a fancy moisturizer when your skin’s so dry that it absorbs everything in two seconds and still feels thirsty?

@Female/Sensitive I know, right? That’s when I just want to throw a blanket of hydration over my face and not think about it. But the price still nags at me. It’s so small for $38. If I’m going to spend that, it better be something I can’t live without.

@Female/Sensitive For real, I keep going back to that price. I don’t know if I can justify it unless it lasts longer than expected. If it’s really good, I’d still consider it, but only if I get lots of uses out of it. I’m just not ready to drop that much for something I can’t be sure about yet.

@Female/Sensitive Totally. If it lasts a couple of months, it might be easier to swallow, but I feel like I could easily find something that does a similar job for less. I think I need to see a few more glowing reviews or maybe even wait for a deal before I pull the trigger.

@Female/Sensitive Same here! If I see it on sale, I’ll be on it faster than you can say "hydrated skin." But for now, I’m sticking with my budget oils and saving this one for when I'm feeling a little more indulgent.
